DX Digest: J.Period Gets Political With Black Thought & Pharoahe Monch On "Rise Up!" While Freeway & Dave East "Hold The Fort Down"

The DX Digest for Tuesday (April 18) has J.Period’s new single, “Rise Up!” featuring Black Thought The Roots, Posdnuos De La Soul, Pharoahe Monch and singer Joss Stone nabbing the crown, while Freeway’s collaboration with Dave East, “Hold The Fort Down,” rides shotgun. Flatbush Zombies and Snoop Dogg’s remix  “Still Palm Trees,” AD & Sorry JayNari’s “Leakin” video with Wiz Khalifa, and Snoop Dogg’s signee Clay James and his new single, “100,” with twin rappers Double Barrellz round out the Top 5. J. period f. Black thought, posdnuos & Pharoahe monch – “Rise up!”

Brooklyn DJ/producer J. Period has recruited some Hip Hop’s finest for the politically charged single, “RISE UP!” which features Black Thought, Pharoahe Monch, Posdnuos and singer Joss Stone. Touching on the current presidency, the song serves as a call for justice, unity, equality, diversity and empathy. Considering the title the track, it makes sense each artist is trying to evoke a sense social responsibility for people to truly wake up and take action. The song is taken from the collaborative album, RISE UP! Music Inspired by America Divided, which also includes contributions from artists like Aloe Blacc, Rhymefest and Xzibit. Listen to the track above.

freeway f. dave east – “hold the fort down”

Roc Nation’s latest signee, Freeway, has surfaced with a new track, “Hold The Fort Down,” featuring Harlem’s Dave East. The song comes ahead his Roc Nation debut, Fear a Free Planet 2, which should arrive in the near future.

Flatbush Zombies f. snoop dogg – “Still Palm Trees (G-MIX)”

Flatbush Zombies have been relatively quiet over the past few months, but they have made a triumphant return with Snoop Dogg on the new single, “Still Palm Trees.” Dubbed the “G-Mix,” the “G” is most likely symbolizing the “gangster” addition Snoop.

Ad & Sorry JayNari f. Wiz Khalifa – “leakin”

AD and Sorry JayNari have dropped the next single from their collaborative project, Last the ’80s. Titled “Leakin,” the track also features a star appearance from Taylor Gang boss Wiz Khalifa in the subsequent video. The album is expected to arrive on April 28.

clay james f. double barrellz – “1oo”

Snoop Dogg signee, Clay James, has hit the ground running with another new single, “100,” which also features Ohio twin rappers Double Barrellz. Produced by Savage Beats and mixed/mastered by legendary engineer Ontreal Bowers, the song is packed with plenty  braggadocious bars and hard-hitting beats.

Rome Fortune – “woops”

Rome Fortune goes “Woops” in his latest single featuring production from Cubby. The infectious single follows his two collaborations with producer/singer Toro Y Moi, “Leotard” and “Boo Mobile II.” Fortune previously worked with OG Maco on “YEAH!” 

the boy illinois – “run the summer up”

The Boy Illinois heats things up with his new single, “Run the Summer,” which finds him rapping about his burgeoning career. Produced by I.B.C.L.A.S.S.I.C., the track features lines like, “Dress pants, dress shoes, chains on, no shirt/Before you test a player, I suggest you do your homework.” Co-signed by Lupe Fiasco, Illi is clearly on his way.

money man f. birdman – “dedicated”

The ficial video for Money Man and Birdman’s “Dedicated” is here. While Jas Prince and his father, J. Prince, are trying to collect millions dollars from the Cash Money CEO, he’s out there flossing his expensive cars and vast collection jewelry.

kyle rapps – “fiction”

Mexico City-based artist Kyle Rapps has resurfaced with an experimental new single, “Fiction,” which serves as the fist leak f his forthcoming self-produced project, Perverse Ramblings. The track revolves around his (many) past sexual exploits and is packed with several references to classic shows like Perfect Strangers and Seinfeld while daydreaming about playing in the NHL.

Scrilla king – “wo wo”

Haitian native Scrilla King follows up his last single “Kylie Jenner” with his latest set visuals for “WOWO.” The single comes from his First Grade LP, which came out earlier this year on his own label SKARR Entertainment. Scrilla, who starts his European headlining tour is currently mulling over fers from Universal Music Group and Warner Bros.
