Nick Cannon Discusses Parenting Double Standards for Twins Moroccan and Monroe
Nick Cannon recently offered a candid look into his parenting philosophy, specifically regarding the different expectations he sets for his 15-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, whom he shares with Mariah Carey. During an appearance on The TMZ Podcast, the multi-hyphenate entertainer addressed the “double standard” he openly enforces when it comes to his children’s dating lives.
“My son [Moroccan] has been dating, and I’ve allowed it, I encouraged it,” Cannon explained. However, when the conversation shifted to his daughter, Monroe, his stance was firm. When asked if he extends the same encouragement to her, Cannon replied, “No, absolutely not.”
Cannon acknowledged that his perspective might be viewed as a double standard, but he remains unapologetic about his protective instincts. “I know I get in trouble a lot ’cause I say things with my chest,” he continued. “But there is a difference when parenting a son and then when parenting a daughter.”
For Cannon, the distinction is rooted in a desire to shield his daughter from potential harm. “I am more protective of my daughter because there are things out there that I have to protect my daughter from,” he said. “Like, as we know, there are a certain type of individuals that you want to keep your daughter away from. If somebody puts their hands on my daughter, I’m going to jail. And if some man puts his hands on my daughter, it’s my worst nightmare because I am going to jail forever.”
Despite his strict outlook, Cannon noted that he has established a communication-based agreement with Monroe. “We made a deal. If she can explain to me what’s going to happen on these dates, then she can go,” he shared. “Your twin brother can go with you. That’s what I do. But you ain’t going one-on-one with no little bastard anywhere.”
As Monroe approaches college age, Cannon admits that he is preparing for the reality that he cannot control every aspect of her life. He emphasized the importance of maintaining open lines of communication, noting that his daughter is comfortable sharing details with him. “My daughter tells me any and everything, and even though I’m apprehensive, I want you to have all the questions answered or whatever, and you make the best decision possible,” he concluded.
