YNW Melly’s Defense Attorneys Speak Out After Judge Denies Bond Release
Jamell Demons, the Florida rapper professionally known as YNW Melly, is set to return to court early next year as prosecutors prepare for a retrial in his long-standing double murder case. The proceedings, which center on the 2019 deaths of his friends YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser, saw a significant development this week when a judge denied the defense’s latest attempt to secure pretrial release. With this ruling, Demons has now been incarcerated for more than seven years.
In response to the court’s decision, his defense attorneys, Drew Findling and Carey Haughwout, released a pointed statement via Instagram. The legal team expressed deep frustration not only with the denial of bond but also with the specific conditions of Demons’ confinement.
“The Court, the State’s Attorney’s Office, and all who observed this bond hearing should have been deeply troubled by the clear evidence presented regarding the inhumane conditions Mr. Demons has endured for over seven years (with the last three in solitary confinement) while presumed innocent under our Constitution,” the attorneys wrote. “Yet the Court denied bond and allowed those conditions to continue without even acknowledging the shocking circumstances under which he was forced to live.”
The defense filing also drew a sharp comparison to other high-profile federal cases, specifically referencing the case of Cole Allen, who is accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump. The attorneys argued that there is a stark contrast in how judicial systems address confinement conditions, noting that while concerns were raised in Allen’s case, similar acknowledgments were absent regarding their client.
Defense Slams Treatment as Retrial Nears
The defense team emphasized the severity of their client’s situation, stating, “In the collective decades of experience shared by this defense team, we have never encountered such cruel treatment comparable to what Mr. Demons has endured.” They added that many colleagues within the legal community have expressed similar outrage regarding the conditions imposed throughout the case. Despite the setback, the statement reaffirmed their commitment to the case and their belief in Demons’ presumption of innocence.
YNW Melly has remained in custody since his initial arrest in 2019. His first trial in 2023 concluded without a unanimous verdict, resulting in a mistrial. As the case moves toward a scheduled retrial in January 2027, the defense remains focused on the upcoming legal battle, acknowledging that a final jury verdict will ultimately determine the outcome.
