“PEACE FLYGOD” is a Dope Prelude to Westside Gunn’s Upcoming 7th Album “Michelle Records” (Mixtape Review)

Westside Gunn is a 39 year old emcee, songwriter & entrepreneur from Buffalo, New York who’s already proven his legend status at this point whether it running one of the hottest hip hop labels in recent memory to his first 2 full-lengths FLYGOD & Supreme Blientele. Last we heard from him was almost a year ago by now with the double disc conclusion to the Hitler Wears Hermes mixtape series with Side B being superior to Side A but with his 40th birthday coming up at the end of the month, he’s celebrating a little early by dropping his 9th mixtape.

After the titular intro, “Jesus Crack” with Estee Nack & Stove God Cook$ sets off the album with drumless yet soulful & jazzy instrumental talking about making cake by the thousands whereas the Estee-assisted “Ritz Barlton” takes a lo-fi boom bap route comparing the halfway house to that of the titular hotel. “Big Ass Bracelet” with Stovey works in a bare soul sample to get on their fly shit, but then “Bobby Rhude” is basically an Estee solo cut talking about glory over more beautiful vocal chops.

Meanwhile on “Derrick Boleman”, we have Gunnlib & Stove God Cooks on top of a classy loop spitting that street shit leading into “Horses on Sunset” incorporates a smoky boom bap beat talking about how someone should’ve shot someone 7 times instead of 6. The song “Open Praise” details love turning to envy ’cause Westside’s success over some pianos while the penultimate “Danhausen” has a jazzy boom bap banger produced by Conductor Williams with West rightfully bragging. “Flip v. Phil” by Stove God ends the album with a sample provided by Daringer reminding that he’ll put his competition to sleep.

I know he’s been teasing Michelle Records for a while now & for him to give us this as a prelude to warm everyone up for the main course, I’ll definitely take it. Stovey & Estee continue to take their lyrically chemistry with Westside to new heights with the production giving off some abstract undertones this time around.

The Bins‘s song “Got” with the duo YGTUT and Nardo Says gets a cinematic remix from producer  Po’ Safe Beats and the result is engaging from top to bottom. from punchy drum grooves and anthemic stabs, the rappers get down to it with their commanding flows and vivid uplifting songwriting to boot. The message here is about breaking the cycle of poverty and the effects of systemic racism and it’s still as relevant as ever.

The single serves as This Po’ Safe Beats debut streaming release.

Peter Spacey ,Skygaze and Xidus Pain deliver “THE BLEND” [video]

Tel-Aviv-based beatmaker/DJ and producer Peter Spacey and fellow electronic producer Skygaze team up with UK emcee Xidus Pain for this soulful and nostalgic tune titled “THE BLEND.” The production is mellow and layered with it’s overall cinematic feel and of course Xiduisu Pain’s evocative and reflective lyrics to boot. The track comes with a pixelated visualizer that matches the futuristic and atmospheric feel of the track.

 

Peter Spacey is the stage name of the Tel-Aviv-based beatmaker/DJ and producer Omer Luz. Starting out as a jazz pianist, he expanded his skill set to include turntablism as well as drum machines and several controllers. These days spacey is working on his debut album Nebula which will be released the next summer. 

“THE BLEND” is the second single from the duo’s Collaborative E.P. The E.P. combines influences of Electronica and Spacey Beats, Bass, Glitch, Organic Sounds, Downtempo, Hip Hop & Groove.

Tatonic and TONYG team up for new single “Loco”

The track dives into the concept of staying persistent and focused in order to achieve one’s goals while the naysayers look dumbfounded. GiddyGang and Vuyo stay “Faithful”

Genre-bending band GiddyGang shares a new single “Faithful” featuring rapper Vuyo. The heartfelt track is built on warm textures and soulful vibes that blend with evocative lyrics and alluring melodic runs. Vuyo opens the floor with his lyrical stylings followed by Sarah Nærø Pettersen‘s sublime vocals that dwell on being true to one’s partner regardless of the craziness around them.

 

“Faithful” is taken from the upcoming EP Sour by Rising genre-bending six-piece ensemble GiddyGang and rapper Vuyo.

GiddyGang and Vuyo team up for “Told Me” [video]

Rising genre-bending six-piece ensembleGiddyGang and Vuyo team up for this soulful collaboration titled “Told Me.” The track is a special blend of soul/R&B/hiphop with its dreamy and warm textures led by vocalist Sarah Nærø Pettersenfor whose sultry and sublime vocals grip the ears from start to finish. Vuyo also delivers the goods with his heartfelt verse ripe with evocative lyrics that center on true love and companionship.

The track is essentially a love story written by Pettersenfor for the band’s producer/drummer Sigmund Vestrheim (Sarah’s now fiancé).

The accompanying video taps into the dreamlike sounds of the song itself and makes use of a hazy/warm DIY-style visual that captures the artists in their day-to-day activities.

Speaking on the track, Sarah said, “Told Me’ was one of the first songs from the EP that I wrote. I had a hard time focusing and writing and started reflecting on my and Sigmund’s relationship, and how he just stays around always acting super calm and patient no matter what we (or I) go through. It’s a little love song dedicated to my best friend and the journey from first getting to know each other to where we are today.”

Speaking on his verse, Vuyo added, “I wanted to take an unconventional approach to a love song. I wrote it like I was a start-up and I wanted my crush to buy into my elevator pitch.”

“Told Me” is the second release from their upcoming EP.

Oslo-based GiddyGang are friends and collaborators with the band centered around engaged couple Sarah Nærø Pettersen (vocals) and Sigmund Vestrheim (drums) along with members, Bård Kristian Kylland (keys), Kevin Andersen (guitar), and Martin Stapnes (bass). As a young collective of beatmakers, songwriters and session musicians GiddyGang’s members have been building hype through their involvement with globally successful Norwegian acts like boy Pablo and Ivan Ave.

GiddyGang and Vuyo dive into the “Sour” issues

Emerging genre-bending six-piece ensemble GiddyGang links up with Vuyo for a jazz/hip-hop fusion collaboration titled “Sour.” The multi-talented band craft a somber and dreamy backdrop for Vuyo’s insightful and revealing lyrics that dive into his background and journey as an artist. From experiencing culture shock after moving from South Africa to Norway to the multitude of issues such as inequality to racial identity, Vuyo gives quite a gripping view that listeners can relate with. Joining him on the track is lead vocalist Sarah Nærø Pettersen who peppers the track with her smooth angelic melodic runs.

 

Speaking on ‘Sour’ Vuyo said: “When we wrote “Sour” i was in the midst of finishing up a trailer for a documentary about my parents involvement in the ANC and SWAPO during Apartheid. Everything coincided with the George Floyd-trial and a book about the fatal killing of Benjamin Hermansen here in Norway that just got released all in the same time period, so I had all these thoughts going through my mind at the time. So I just tried to abbreviate my adolescence into a verse and get those feelings of my chest.”
