Welcome to TWIB’s Weekly Top 5 Videos. This is a segment where we will be looking at some exceptional visuals from various acts from around the globe. The music video format has been around for decades and through the 90s and 2000s, it has really taken flight from multi-million budget music videos, to mid to low-budget videos with exceptional features. In this section, we will not discriminate but rather highlight some of the creative visuals that pop up on our radar.
Fekky x Haile – “Heavy Heavy”
Fekky and Haile open up this week’s top video list with “Heavy Heavy,” a reflective track that details Fekky’s hustle game and the obstacles he had to face to be successful. Bolstered by a sublime backdrop, Fekky comes through with the vivid bars accompanied by Haile’s soothing melodic hook to complete the mission. The visual captures the lifestyle of a true champion, from the gritty streets to a lavish outdoor candle-lit dinner, Feeky shows viewers how he gets down.
Lumidee – “Fria”
Spanish Harlem rapper/singer Lumidee returns with the vibrant single “Fria” which reminds us of her unique sounds. The production is cinematic and takes elements from both Latin America and the Middle East that fit Lumidee’s confident and boisterous flow. The visual has a dramatic feel and makes use of cut-scenes, performance shots, and engaging aesthetics that embody the underground vibe of New York.
Stringz EMB – “Hijacked”
St. Louis-based R&B and soul singer Stringz EMB shares the visuals for his single “Hijacked.” The heartfelt song details a fledgling relationship and the varying emotions that come with it. The visuals are well-crafted and explore the ups and downs of a couple spliced with visuals of Stringz in a snow-covered mountain top in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado alluding to emotional pain.
3D The Boss – “Heaven and Paradise”
Experimental R&B/pop group 3D The Boss switch up the vibe on the list with their new single “Heaven and Paradise” which explores the essence of true love and vulnerability in relationship with oneself, others. The track is as lively as they come and it’s ripe with punchy drums, lush textures, and a catchy melodic performance from frontwoman Boss Lady. The visuals have a warm and inviting feel as it captures the group having a get-together with friends and families and it also splices performance shots of the band. It’s quite engaging and also exudes a nostalgic feel.
DJ Power x Vybz Kartel x SL x Junior Reid x NojokeJigsaw – “Special Delivery”
The list closes out on a bang with the help of DJ Power, Dancehall legends Vybz Kartel and Junior Reid, Brooklyn-based Scrilla Hef , Toronto’s NoJokeJigsaw, and the UK drill emcee SL who team up for “Special Delivery.” The result is a trap/dancehall jam that blends unique styles in a seamless manner. From Junior Reid’s characteristic melodic stylings to Vybz Kartel’s booming voice that works alongside Scrilla Hef’s fiery flow, Nojokejigsaw’s smooth delivery, and SL’s laidback raps. The visual does justice and captures each artist in their element and neighborhood. From Kingston, Jamaica, Toronto, Canada, Brooklyn NY to London, UK, viewers get a whiff of what a truly international collaboration looks like.
