Welcome to the 8th edition of TWIB’s Weekly Top 5 Videos. This is a segment where we will be looking at some exceptional visuals from various acts from around the globe. The music video format has been around for decades and through the 90s and 2000s, it has really taken flight from multi-million budget music videos, mid to low-budget videos with exceptional features. In this section, we will not discriminate but rather highlight some of the creative visuals that pop up on our radar.

 

 

 

Rosewood Swing – “Northside Knights”

Emerging Jackson, MS-based hip-hop artist/producer Rosewood Swing opens up this week’s list with the video for his song “Northside Knights.” The reallyraw produced track has a hazy and smokey vibe that fits Rosewood’s laidback and nonchalant flow reminiscent of Curren$y, Snopp Dogg, etc. The visual has a DIY and retro aesthetic which captures Roswewood’s unique style.

The single is taken from the upcoming EP Northside Knights.

 

Shogun – “Far North”

Shogun comes through with a lyrical exercise on wax with his new release “Far North.” Over a moody backdrop, he details his passion for the art of rap, from the varied rhyme scheme, evocative lyrics, and fiery cadence to boot. The visual is cinematic and makes use of extensive performance shots of the rapper doing what he knows best. Shogun is a Scottish rapper. Raised in Paisley, he rose to popularity in 2016 for his lyrically sharp, fierce, and politically charged performance in his freestyle video Vulcan. He recently starred on the BBC Three show The Rap Game UK.

 

Frenchrapqueen – “R O C K A”

Frenchrapqueen  lives up to her name as seen in her new single “R O C K A.” The bass-heavy trap track is a display of her femininity and lyrical styling that puts her ahead of the pack. The visual is quite engaging as well an makes use of eye-catching motifs, fast-cut scenes, and color aesthetics that are striking.

 

Dax x Snow Tha Product – “A Lot At Stake”

Dax and Snow Tha Product know that “A Lot At Stake” as they team up for this solid jam. The emcees deliver the goods with fast-paced flows and poignant lyrics. The visual continues Dax’s cinematic style and use of expressive motifs.

 

 

 

 

730FM & Phntm Mnce – “Caged”

“CAGED” is the newest collaboration between 730FM and PHNTM MNCE. The result is a soulful and solemn track that sees both emcees delivering bravado-laden bars and impassioned flows. The visual makes use of several performance shots and visual effects with seamless transitions.
