Most jazz fans would know his name, but for those who know Herb Alpert‘s work in hiphop would first refer to the Biggie Smalls‘ 1997 pop hit Hypnotize by using Alpert’s 1979 hit Rise (which was also co-written by Andy Armer & nephew Randy “Badazz” Alpert). Other artists like Cypress Hill, Black Sheep, Nas, Queen Latifah, and more have used Alpert’s music in their songs.
Now the Los Angeles jazz legend has a documentary out now that talks about his life and legacy. Guests such as Questlove, Quincy Jones, and Sting offer commentary in the doc. It also showcases rare footage and interviews that has yet to be seen. Alpert has sold over 72M albums – with 29 of them gold or platinum, has outsold The Beatles in 1966, and has co-founded with Jerry Moss A&M Records (tribute site here) which is the most successful indie record company in history.
