Where We’re From shares new documentary “Rise Of Underground L.A. Hip-Hop” [video]
Shout! Studios just announced the release of “Where We’re From: Rise of L.A. Underground Hip Hop” for August 24th. A quintessential documentary that dives deep into the west coast scene that produced a wide variety of figures that impacted hip-hop globally. The documentary was produced by and directed by DJ Bonds and DJ Breeze, who were the founders and producers of Club Elements. From roughly 1998 – 2002, Elements went from an underground club night to hosting showcases at the El Rey Theater for national acts to even producing live events for Fat Beats and Rawkus Records.
The feature will splice interviews and personal VHS tapes taken by DJ Bonds during that era highlighting a plethora of underground legends in their heyday. It gives a nuanced and balanced view of the times so nothing is sugarcoated as viewers get to see raw, uncut footage such as when emcee battle champion Otherwize who was the same cat who also beat Eminem at the much-storied Rap Olympics and ironically decided not to work with Dr. Dre. It was also when the legendary Phife Dawg (A Tribe Called Quest) was brought to judge an emcee battle and instead got into a heated battle with one of the participants.
The documentary features names such as Freestyle Fellowship, Jurassic 5, Planet Asia, Talib Kweli, Souls Of Mischief, Dilated Peoples and more!
Premiering in Home Theaters Everywhere August 24, 2021
